Today, June 1, marks the beginning of Pride month, when we commemorate the Stonewall Uprising of June/July, 1969. We use the month to honor community power and the queer ancestors who refused to let our right to belonging be stripped from us via systemic oppression and police violence. We reclaim pride from its colonialist associations with sinfulness and shame, because we know our queerness is love. That pride is the opposite of shame. Pride is, at its root, a celebration of love, revelry in belonging, and a rejection of the systematic oppression that’s tries so hard to obliterate us through the force of constructed shame. This is a reclamation we can all benefit from, and one of the many gifts that Queer and Trans folks have to offer this world is the lesson of cultivating more liberation and belonging by cultivating a sense of pride.
