Yoga & Body Image (6-Week Class Series)

In this six-week class series, students will take a deep dive into the relationship between yoga, the body, and the self. Each week we’ll discuss a component of this relationship, ranging from media representations and public perception of the “yoga body,” to tenants of yoga philosophy, such as non-violence and impermanence, that can change the way we relate to our own bodies for the better. We’ll follow each discussion by embodying these concepts through breath, movement, and meditation practices that are adaptable for all bodies and levels of practice. Everyone is welcome. Those who have never practiced yoga before because they weren’t sure their body would be welcomed are
especially encouraged to attend.

Thursdays, October 18 – November 21, 7:45 – 9:15 p.m. | Willow Street Yoga
Takoma Park, Maryland

Yoga for Teens & Tweens (8-Week Class Series)

Yoga offers stable ground as well as recognition of life changes. In tumultuous times and a challenging stage of development, this practice offers students an opportunity to cope with the conflicts and stress they face in their daily lives. Students can be creative,  improve flexibility, balance, coordination and strength, in a playful and developmentally appropriate class. We will provide a safe space to learn yoga poses, breathing practices, meditation and other stress relieving techniques. No yoga experience required – all are welcomed.

Mondays, October 28 – December 16, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. | Yoga Heights (Takoma)

I Want More: The Yoga of Desire, Pleasure & Agency (Workshop)

How does your current relationship with your body affect your experience of pleasure? When do you feel like you “have permission” to feel good? What do you find yourself wanting more of–at home, at work, in bed, at the dinner table? Do you actually know what you want?

Many of us, particularly those of us in marginalized bodies, have experienced the demonization of our desires. It’s hard to avoid internalizing these messages, but doing so often limits our sense of choice. How can we free up more options, including those options we’d ultimately find most pleasurable? What tools does yoga have to offer us in our quest for agency?

This workshop provides a forum to explore desire in a community setting, incorporating group discussion, creative expression through artful storytelling, and ample opportunities to connect to your body and desires through adaptive movement practices that are suitable for all bodies and abilities. No prior yoga experience is required.

Saturday, November 16, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. | Willow Street Yoga
Silver Spring, Maryland
